Hearing Age Test Tower of the Mosquitones
The Mosquitones are little monsters living in the tower. Count how many times their wings buzz (the mosquito tone), and Ryu and Roby climb higher. The highest pitch you can hear gives a rough idea of your hearing age.
Set your volume
Press "Play a test sound" to hear a tone 3 times. Set a comfortable volume before you start.
Starting floor
How to play
- During the 6-second listening time, a high tone plays 0 to 4 times (sometimes not at all).
- Answer how many times it played with the 0–4 buttons.
- Get it right twice in a row at the same pitch to go up to the next floor (a higher tone). You can make one mistake per floor. Two mistakes and the climb ends there.
- You start at 8,000Hz (Floor 1) and go up. Floors above 20,000Hz (21,000–23,000Hz) appear only as high as your device can play. Your hearing age is estimated from the highest tone you could hear.
- You can also start partway up the tower with "Starting floor".
Earphones or headphones are recommended (phone speakers often can't play very high sounds well). Set your volume first using the normal-pitch test sound. Please don't turn the volume up too loud.
Hearing age is only a rough guide (our own estimate) to the pitches each age group tends to hear. It also changes with your earphones and device. This is not a medical test. If you're worried about your hearing, please see an ear doctor.

About the Hearing Age Test: Tower of the Mosquitones
This is a hearing age checker where you climb a tower by counting the high-pitched buzz (the mosquito tone) of the Mosquitones, monsters that live in the tower. You start at 8,000Hz on Floor 1, and the tone gets higher with every floor. On each floor, guess how many times the tone plays (0 to 4 times) in 6 seconds. Your hearing age is estimated from the highest tone you could hear.
How to use
- First, press "Play a test sound" to play a 1,000Hz tone and set a comfortable volume (earphones recommended).
- Press "Listen" and answer how many times the tone played in 6 seconds with the 0–4 buttons. Two correct answers in a row at the same pitch take you to the next floor.
- When you miss twice on one floor or reach the top floor, you see the highest tone you could hear and your estimated hearing age.
FAQ
What is a mosquito tone?
It is a very high-pitched sound, around 17,000Hz. High sounds get harder to hear as we age, so it is said that only young people can hear it.
Can I test with my phone's speaker?
Some devices cannot play very high sounds well, so we recommend earphones or headphones.
Is the hearing age accurate?
It is only a rough guide to the pitches each age group tends to hear. It also changes with your device and earphones. This is not a medical test.
